Amzi! Adds Sockets Support
for Building Network Applications

September 20, 1996 - Stow, MA-Amzi! has added a new 'Logic Server Extension' (LSX) that supports the Berkeley/Windows Sockets API. This extension makes it possible to build and communicate with Internet clients and servers for mail, ftp, news, web, chat and much more.

Sockets are the key to network programming in a TCP/IP (Internet) environment. The API provides a simple interface for writing network applications. It consists of functions to look up domain names/addresses, and create, manage and close communications channels. The original Sockets interface was designed by Berkeley for Unix, and a Windows, or Winsock interface was standardized more recently.

The Amzi! Sockets LSX implements the synchronous portion of the Winsock API for communicating directly from Amzi! Prolog. It makes use of Prolog structures and lists where appropriate to provide a natural, easy-to-use interface for Prolog.

Because the Amzi! Logic Server allows the embedding of Prolog modules in C, C++, Java, Visual Basic, Delphi and many other tools and languages, the Sockets interface can be used entirely in Prolog or shared between Prolog and the host language or tool.

The Sockets LSX is the latest addition to Amzi!'s Internet tools which include the Java Class, CGI Interface and WebLS freeware application for adding advisors and problem solvers on Web pages. The Sockets LSX is implemented for 32-bit Windows NT or 95 and includes full C and Prolog source code, documentation and samples. It requires the 3.3 release of Amzi! Prolog + Logic Server and is available for downloading from Amzi!'s Web site, http://www.amzi.com
